Makin' Me Think | Main | Nick Berg May 11, 2004Freaking Hijackers!!Somehow I got some bastard pop up ad that installed itself on my computer from Adintelligence that will NOT uninstall when attempted (big surprise), as well as an univited Purityscan, and a Clearsearch folder that I can not remove from my own damn computer, as well as about 5 other folder, 3 of which I can not delte. I am completely disgusted. How in the hell do I get this stuff off my computer? What a sleazy way of producting one's business. Disgraceful.

Well, if you're comfortable messing around in the registry, you can alwasy do a regedit now that you know the names of what you need to get rid of.

Well, I did run my Spybot thing, however, I can't get rid of the folders in my Program Files. "Access Denied."
Not sure if I've tampered with the registry... that probably means I haven't, eh?

Do a Google search for the offending file/program names. Whenever I have a problem with something that I can't figure out I've been able to find message boards or a page someone has put up with instructions on how to get rid of it.

Good idea, Heather. Will do.

You might also try going to your add/remove programs program from your control panel. I found one of those listed in mine and was able to remove it there quite easily. Good luck

Damn spyware! Girl, you have my sympathy. I know this doesn't help you now, but if you have the Spybot thing, update it! I didn't update mine, tho I would still run it, and some spyware installed itself on my computer, and completely clogged up and disabled my internet explorer. I had to call my local computer geek who came out and got rid of it. (he also did some other chores at $65/hr. Yikes!

Gah I am forever getting those things! Norton does a pretty good job of getting rid of them but I have one right now that says "Access Denied" whenever I try to delete it. Sigh. Let me know if you figure it out :\

I use ad-aware 6.0 (by lavasoft and is free for personal use and we also use it at work) and it gets all of those crappy little things that end up on my puter. I spent the past week getting rid of some crap called NAVHELP that loaded itself on to my system through a download that I thought was from a legit site. Good luck!

Ah I just downloaded ad-aware and it got rid of everything. There were a lot more of them on my hard drive than I thought (68!)

This is a really good tool you can download: http://www.safer-networking.org/ it cleans and imunizes your computer.
This one helps you detect and clean certain ones without any programs to download, it just runs a script through the browser: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/
Good Luck!

Okay, so I've ran and/or installed and ran Spybot, Adware and NAV. I can NOT get rid of the Adware on my computer. It's so bad now that it's actually forcing fake links onto my computer by highlighting certain words and linking them to other pages.
WTHF?

Gah. Whenever I ran Adaware the first time it said some files were currently in use and I would have to restart and something like it would delete them before they loaded or something?...did yours do anything like that? :\

Back up your files and format c:\

Gah, Say! That really sucks. I've got some booger on my computer that I can't get rid of, but it's not near as bad as what you're putting up with. Mine is related to (I just know it is) a google search bar called "My Search" that I one time, very mistakenly used.

Hmmm, stumbled here because I have the same ad intelligence problem. Try this. Restart your computer in Safe mode and run the programs. Additionally, going through the registry and manually deleting everything works well (Albeit is much slower). Just be careful what you delete.
You can reach Safe mode by going to Run-->MsConfig and then under the Boot.ini tab click "/safeboot." Fix the problem and then run "Msconfig" again after its fixed and uncheck "/Safeboot."
Another great option is going online and looking at various sites. One specifically great method is to go to a site that looks at the logs from a program called "Hijack This" which is really helpful. Most forums have atleast acouple of tech geeks that can help you.
Well, hope that helped.
